NPA's Ambush Plan Foiled In Masbate

CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, Camarines Sur – A special team of soldiers from the 9th Infantry Division foiled a planned ambush on its soldiers after the confiscation of improvised bombs and firearms in an NPA safehouse in Barangay Boca Engano, Claveria, Masbate, a military report said.

In a report submitted by Lieutenant Colonel Leoncio Cirunay, CO of 22nd Infantry Battalion, he disclosed that on February 24, 2010 at around 8:00 am, 9-man Squad from his unit led by 1st Lt Emmanuel Dalman tracked the NPA liaison officer (“poste”) who stored the firearms and explosive devices at his own house in aforementioned village.

Discovered inside the said house were two claymore mines, six (6) improvised explosive devices (IEDs), one (1 ) Cal 22 Rifle, one (1) Cal .38 revolver and one (1) shotgun.

Cirunay also said that the arrested NPA liaison officer (name withheld for security reasons) revealed that the same type of claymore mines and IEDs were used in an ambush that injured five soldiers in Mobo, Masbate in January 2010.

The arrested NPA liaison officer and the recovered explosives were turned over to 9th IB headquarters for proper disposition.

Major General Ruperto Pabustan, Commander of the 9th Infantry Division, directed the Philippine Army forces in the Bicol Region to intensify its campaign against the CPP-NPA-NDF especially that election period is only a few months away.
