Masbate Shooting Left 1 Political Supporter Dead

CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, Camarines Sur – A shooting incident in Placer, Masbate involving political supporters of opposing mayoralty candidates left one man dead, a military officer said.

1st Lieutenant Julius Apolinar Feria, Commander of the Army Infantry Company based in Placer town, said that the shooting occurred at about 5:45 pm yesterday (April 18), resulting to the instantaneous death of a certain Carlo Antipolo.

The shooting transpired in the campaign headquarters of mayoralty candidate Fernando Talisic in Bgy Katipunan, Placer, Masbate.

Major Harold M Cabunoc, Division Spokesperson, said that Army troops led by Feria were among those who immediately responded in the crime scene to check the reported shooting incident.

Together with elements of PNP Regional Mobile Group led by PSI Balla, the soldiers disarmed the suspect, identified as PO1 Gilbert Patingan, the security escort of Placer Mayor Joshur Judd Seachon Lanete.

“Our initial investigation reveals that there was a petty heckling among the supporters of the opposing candidates when the vehicle convoy carrying the supporters of Mayor Joshur Lanete passed by the group of mayoralty candidate Fernando Talisic. There was an exchange of gunfire among the opposing groups as one of the vehicles of Mayor Lanete also bore a bullet hole”, said Feria.

Patingan is currently detained in Placer police station as a criminal case is filed against him.

The Special Task Force Masbate has recorded 8 election-related violent incidents (ERVIs) as of today. Masbate has recorded 22 ERVI’s in 2004 and 18 tally in 2007 elections.

The latest incident occurred after the deployment of additional Army troops in Masbate on April 16, 2010.

Major General Ruperto R Pabustan said that the deployment of additional Army troops all over Masbate Island will boost the capability of the STF Masbate in effectively controlling violent incidents during the election period.
