Poll Security Personnel Ambushed by NPA Terrorists in Sorsogon

CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, CamSur – A squad of Army soldiers detailed to secure a polling center was ambushed by suspected NPA terrorists in Sorsogon yesterday (May 11), a military report said.

Major Harold M Cabunoc, 9th ID Spokesman, said that 2nd Lieutenant Warren Bionat and 10 other soldiers were on their way back to their camp when they were ambushed by more or less 5 heavily armed rebels in Bgy San Pascual, Casiguran town at around 3:00pm.

Bionat said that his group was returning to their camp in Casay village after rendering their services as the security detail for the polling center, when they were fired upon by heavily armed rebels.

“The ambush site was an inhabited area and the rebels were hiding behind the houses. We returned fire but we were restricted by the presence of innocent people caught in the crossfire.,” said Bionat.

Bionat suffered a slight leg-wound but he pressed the fight to repulse the attacking rebels. He said that no one was injured among the civilian residents in the area.

The troops discovered a rebel’s cellphone and pools of blood along the route of withdrawal, after 10 minutes of gunfight.

The wounded officer was immediately brought to a local hospital in Sorsogon City as troop reinforcements came to pursue the fleeing rebels.

Several small-scale retaliatory attacks and series of murders victimizing unarmed soldiers had been launched by the terrorist rebels during the past 3months.

The attacks came after the killing of several of its cadres and the recovery of seven high-powered firearms in a decisive encounter launched by Army troops in Ginangra town on January 10 this year.

Rebel attacks had waned during the election period but are expected to resume after the polls especially that many of the communist rebels’ supported political candidates and party list groups failed to make it to the top in Bicol region’s canvassing of votes.

During the past 5 days, two shooting attacks by the terrorist rebels were recorded, targeting both PNP and Army personnel in Catanduanes, but causing no injuries on both sides.

Major General Ruperto Pabustan, Commander of the 9th Infantry Division has directed all sub-commanders in the Bicol Region to place all units on high alert with the rising number of ambuscades perpetrated by the NPA terrorists.
