Army Chief Pins Combat Medals on Masbate Soldiers

CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, Camarines Sur – The Commanding General of the Philippine Army grants combat medals to deserving soldiers in Masbate yesterday, a military official said.

LtCol Anthony Purugganan, Commander of the 9th Infantry Battalion said that Major General Arturo Ortiz paid a visit to his unit in Milagros town at around 8:00 am yesterday, to grant the Military Merit Medals to soldiers for ‘acts of heroism in the performance of their duties’.

Five soldiers were cited for their recent combat accomplishment wherein four NPA terrorists were killed and three firearms were recovered in a clash in Mobo town on September 7.

A highly-respected combat officer and leader, encouraged the soldiers to perform their tasks to the best of their ability.

“I hope the combat medals that you have just received will inspire everyone to do his best and contribute towards the accomplishment of the Army’s mission,” said Ortiz.

Ortiz also reminded the soldiers about the importance of military discipline and its impact on the people in the Army’s counter-insurgency campaign.

“I want you to always remember that the best way to win the hearts and minds of the people is to show your highest standard of discipline. Do not commit abuses and be the protectors of the people against the oppressive NPA bandits,” Ortiz added.

The newly installed Army Chief has recently visited various field units around the country to ‘boost the morale of the soldiers’ and provide mission-essential requirements to frontline troops.

A living hero, Ortiz is one of the living Medal for Valor awardees in the country today.
