Legaspi City, Albay - At about 10am today (September 16, 2009), a police convoy led by SPO2 Audie Coralde was ambushed by suspected CPP/NPA rebels at Brgy. Binugsakan, Guinobatan, Albay while transporting local communist terrorist leader Iglecirio Pernia aka “Ka Choy“. One of the security escorts identified as PO1 Rommel Aringo was wounded in the attack. He was later brought to Aquinas University Hospital in Legaspi City for treatment and is now reported to be in good condition.
Meanwhile, an unharmed Pernia was brought back to Ligao City Jail for proper disposition. He is facing a string of criminal cases. Pernia was arrested by combined elements of the AFP and PNP while betting on fighting cocks in a cockpit arena in Bulacan province. He was carrying a huge stash of cash during his arrest.
In an interview over Radyo Bombo-Legaspi City, Ka Greg Banares, spokesman of the CPP/NPA in Bicol region, baselessly accused the AFP for this attack. "The military intends to kill Ka Choy because of his accomplishments for the communist movement", he said.
In response, MAJOR HAROLD CABUNOC, PIO 9ID, said that the incident was a foiled snatch attempt by the CPP/NPA terrorists. "The military cannot afford to harm or kill our brothers from the PNP just to carry out our alleged evil intentions", he said. MAJOR CABUNOC likewise emphasized that it has been the policy of the CPP/NPA to kill their comrades and former members such as what happened in Leyte, Davao, Misamis Oriental, Bicol, Southern Tagalog and Northern Mindanao areas.
