Abducted Militiamen Killed by NPA Rebels

Act of Cowardice. Two (2) Civilian Auxilliary volunteers treacherously killed by CPP/NPA terrorists in Bula, Camarines Sur.

CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, CamSur – Two (2) CAFGU personnel who were abducted by NPA terrorists yesterday were shot and killed in a remote village of Bula town, a military official said.

LtCol Ernesto Cruz, the Battalion Commander of the 42nd Infantry Battalion based in Nabua, Camarines Sur said that his soldiers had found the cadavers of the abducted militiamen at around 8:00pm last night (May 20) after receiving a phone call from village leader Herminigildo Bolante of Bgy Taisan.

Cruz said that the militiamen, Edwin Belando,47, and Stanly Portugues,36, were hogtied and blindfolded by their captors while they were heading towards the hinterlands of Taisan village.

“I have seen the torture marks on the dead bodies indicating that they endured too much suffering from their captors. Each of them was shot in the head at point blank range, “ added Cruz.

A local resident who refused to be identified, claimed that he personally saw the NPA rebels repeatedly hitting the victims with their rifles.

“I can hear their pleadings and their painful moans due to the severe beatings. They were killed and dumped near the residence of our village leader,” the eyewitness said.

The two militiamen were captured by the NPA terrorists who torched down two motor graders owned by Sunwest Development Corporation, in Sto Nino Village of Bula town yesterday at 10:40am.

The duo were on off-duty status and were unarmed when they were chanced upon by the terrorist rebels near the scene of the burning incident.

Col Leoncio Cirunay, Commander of the 22nd Infantry Battalion which administers all CAFGU personnel in the Bicol Region, said that he received a report from a reliable informant that the NPA rebels targeted the construction equipment of Sunwest Development Corporation simply because it is owned by Zaldy Co, a businessman who is identified with the Ako Bicol partylist.

“Ako Bicol partylist has dominated the polls this year and the terrorist rebels blamed it for the sudden decline of the supporters who voted for the party-list organizations which were campaigned for by the NPA rebels in the Bicol Region,” said Cirunay.

“This is one of the reasons cited by my informant why they have targeted the equipment of Sunwest Corporation, aside from their continuous refusal to pay the demanded extortion money from private contractors,” he added.

Major Harold Cabunoc, 9th ID Spokesperson said that records of the 9th ID show that in 2009, the NPA rebels had murdered 34 unarmed soldiers, militiamen, policemen and suspected military informants.

“This year, the communist terrorist rebels have continued their murderous killing spree victimizing unarmed soldiers, resulting to the killing of 1 soldier, 7 CAFGU personnel and 4 civilians,” Cabunoc said.

“It is an indication that they have indeed lived up to their earned reputation as bandits and terrorists. We will file a complaint before the Commission on Human Rights regarding these abuses,” added Cabunoc.

Major General Ruperto Pabustan, Commander of the 9th Infantry Division, has directed all soldiers to be on high-alert even during their vacation period to prevent similar attacks in the future. Pursuit operations have also been launched by both the AFP and PNP personnel to arrest the terrorist rebels who are responsible for the recent atrocities.

Another victim of CPP/NPA barbarism...and counting. How many more will be murdered? How many more families will be destroyed? How many more kids will become orphans?
